FESTIVAL ON CAPITOL LAWN MERGES MUSIC ARTS AND ACTIVISM DURING RNC
Youth Organized Event Provides Safe Space to Engage in Progressive Action
(Ripple Effect)
FEATURING: MICHAEL FRANTI, ANTI-FLAG, DEAD PREZ, WOOKIEFOOT w/MATISYAHU, I SELF DEVINE,K-SALAAM, INDIGO, TRU RUTS, THE SUSTAINABLE LIVING ROADSHOW, WINONA LADUKE (indigenous rights and environmental activist), MEDEA BENJAMIN (co-founder of CODEPINK & Global Exchange), WILL STEGER (polar explorer and global warming activist) - HOSTED BY SHA CAGE!
On September 2nd 2008, 7-10,000 people will gather at the state capitol lawn to engage in trainings, educational workshops, community building activities, music, and art in the name of positive social and environmental change.
Organized by a local nonprofit led by three motivated young progressives all under the age of 23, Ripple Effect will be Substance’s first step in a series of efforts to create a united intergenerational front. These events are aimed at embracing the core values of the environmental and social justice movements, with a collective understanding that the solutions to these problems will require us to break down issue and generational barriers.
“Ripple Effect” - a daylong festival propelling a new wave of progressive action outside the RNC - will go beyond the convention and beyond partisanship to empower and unite a diverse range of people with varying backgrounds and interests.
By creating a safe, positive space for artists, activists, and the general public to gather, Ripple Effect will take the energy spurred by the Republican National Convention and be a catalyst to further the already burgeoning global movement for sustainability, justice, and equality
.
Their work is not finished, however, as they have yet to meet their fundraising goal. A firm ideal from the start is to keep the event free and open to all, and they are raising money organically from individuals and like-minded companies. Ripple Effect is being put on entirely by unpaid volunteers and organizers, who are working full time to ensure its success.
