Carrying the message of Ripple Effect forward

Ripple Effect hit and made waves in St. Paul, and now it is time to ensure the success on September 2nd carries outward.  Visit this site, or www.livewithsubstance.org to stay up to date on Substance’s work; the movement to take music back to the people and back to its roots in social change is progressing, but all progressives have a long way to go in the pursuit of justice and equality. Look below for some things you can do.
- Help Substance make up the financial cost of the Ripple Effect event.  The three of us took on personal debt to ensure Ripple Effect happened, regardless of a lack of big money support.  As Nolan and I are finishing our undergraduate degrees, Substance is moving forward, but we need your support still to make up the difference.  We are looking to raise $25,000 in the next two months to cover our debt.
- Donate HERE.
- Purchase Ripple Effect merchandise.  We have two varieties of t-shirts, and are printing more as we speak.  We also have tabloid size posters available.  Click here.
- Help spread the message of the Ripple Effect.  Big Media skewed the event, but we know what happened.  See the press release on this site for more info, or contact us for more info or tips (info@livewithsubstance.org, 763-913-2192 [Nolan]).  Making sure people know about how positive the Ripple Effect really was is important for carrying the goals and message forward.
- If you have any pictures or video footage of Ripple Effect, please send us copies.  Email to:  info@livewithsubstance.org.  Mail to:  Substance, care of: Jim Forrey; 1105 26th Ave. SE; Minneapolis, MN  55414.
- We are specifically looking for the footage of the State Capitol staff cutting the power at 6:45.  We know this got videotaped, and this would help our case ahead.
- Also, please send us anything that mentions the event; press, blogs, etc.  See this website for a portion of our press.
- Sign up on our email list to stay up to date on our work.

- College Chapter Program - If you are interested in getting involved in Substance, contact us.  We have an internship program for youth in the Twin Cities, and a College Chapter Program starting for those interested in our work outside of Minnesota.
- Check out the partner organizations listed here, especially if you did not get a chance to at the event.
Thank you to everyone that volunteered, donated, and supported us in anyway.  Thank you to all the bands and performers involved.  Thank you to everyone that came out and made Ripple Effect a truly impactful event.  This is going down in the history books because of all of you.  Thank you all very much.
Substance is moving forward on the mission Ripple Effect; please stay tuned and get involved however you can.
- Jim, Substance

THANK YOU ALL FOR A WONDERFUL DAY!

AS FESTIVAL ENDS, THE RIPPLE EFFECT BEGINS

- State Officials’ Reaction to Rage Against the Machine on Capitol Lawn Ensures Continued Progressive Action -

This past Tuesday, the “Ripple Effect” began on several levels. Thousands of people gathered on the Capitol Lawn and connected with progressive organizations and each other, ensuring a movement of constructive, positive, progressive action. The entire day was filled with peaceful interaction between law enforcement, demonstrators, and the general public.

Unfortunately, Substance (the organization behind the event) was forced to forfeit a surprise performance by Rage Against the Machine due to intervention by Capitol Staff and State Law Enforcement.

Despite their permit, which granted them use of the area until 7 PM and held no artist-specific provisions – Capitol Grounds Staff chose to cut power to the stage at approximately 6:45, ten minutes after Rage Against the Machine had been held up by state troopers blocking their entrance to the stage, leaving thousands of anxious fans waiting on the State Capitol Lawn. After 20 minutes of crowd chanting that included “Let Them Play,” “Music is not a Crime,” “We’ll be good, we promise,” and a riveting rendition of the national anthem the band came into the crowd and performed an acapella performance of two songs through a megaphone. The crowd then spontaneously marched to the RNC and met up with the Poor People’s March.

After a day of education and involvement, an impact was made from which positive progressive action will continue to Ripple out - well past the RNC.

See You at the Capitol!

The Ripple Effect is about to drop!

12:30 pm at the Capitol Tomorrow! Tuesday, September 2nd.
Through the multitude of organizations involved, there will be interactive activities throughout the day including issue and activist mini-workshops from 1pm until 5:30, many activities at the Sustainable Living Roadshow area, and of course - a substantial amount of music with Substance.

Come early! We end at 7pm sharp.

We are rain or shine, and are going on regardless of the RNC’s schedule.

Check out the Parking and Transportation tab for info on how to get to Ripple Effect, what buses to take, park and rides, and parking info.

Though we are short on our budget, we are now contributing any funds we raise above our event costs to Gustov Hurricane Relief.  Look at Oxfam’s work on this for more info - Help Oxfam continue its work to strengthen the Gulf Coast.

We will be collecting donations at Ripple Effect from our merchandise booth on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to cover the costs of this free, nonprofit event.  Please come and contribute.  We will also have two different Ripple Effect t-shirts available and other merch.  All proceeds go to cover the cost of this event, and the goals behind it.

There will be a food and beverage vendor on the grounds (provided by the City of St. Paul), as well as a number of mercandise vendors.  There will be an ATM on site.  All vendors are on MLK Jr. Blvd.

Thank you everyone, thanks for your support.  And remember, this is a free event (no ticket necessary, though donations much appreciated).  Open to all (though the content is not censored).

- please come to the “Manifest Station” booth for event info, info on our goals as an organization in addition to our goals with Ripple Effect, and info on the orgs and how to get involved.  We are also still looking for volunteers.

Thanks again and take care,
Substance
